At South Coast swing we offer dance tuition and entertainment for dancing to Swing music. Take note there is no such dance style as Swing. Swing is the music and to go Swinging is to go dancing; although there are other more modern interpretations on swinging!

We can offer dance tuition for private individuals and groups, as well themed events for 40s evenings, classic car shows, vintage aircraft displays, etc.

The classic dance style for dancing to swing music is Lindyhop, a fusion of jazz and Charlston that originates from the late twenties and thirties. Lindyhop is generally thought to be the ‘black’ mans dance while the whites danced Jitterbug, a more upright style. Both Lindyhop and Jitterbug reduced in popularity after WW II as the pop music of the day switched to rhythm and blues, and rock and roll.

There has been a renaissance in interest in Swing music; although maybe not as large as some have hoped for. Some pop artists e.g. Robbie Williams, Westlife have produced successful Swing albums and there are now more mainstream popular Jazz artists than for many years e.g. Jamie Cullum, Michael Buble, etc and consequently there is a desire for being able to dance appropriately to the swing music elements of these artists. There are a huge number of great modern Swing bands and producing wonderful music playing to a ‘hidden’ scene that one-day we hope will become mainstream once more.

Currently we are not offering a regular dance class for Lindyhop but plan to offer one-off Workshops and introduce guest dancers etc.

However, we are able to offer dance tuition for private individuals and groups, as well offer themed evenings for 40s evenings, etc.
