The Latin Quarter – Tango – Keenes Dance Studio, Tarring Road, Worthing
The origins of the tango are obscure (aren’t they all? Dance styles always seem to be evolving), but it is known that the dance started in the bars, brothels and barrios (districts) of Buenos Aires.
Tango combines rhythmic patterns of African dance with footwork that resembles the kicks and flicks of South American gauchos. Tango as we know it today has it’s origins in pre-second world war Buenos Aires; the 1940s and 50s were the Golden years of Tango.
Authentic tango, according to the enthusiasts, is where the couples are in close-hold and move sinuously around crowded floors. Their close embrace, or Milonguero-style tango is all about connecting: connecting to one’s partner, connecting to the music, connecting to the spirit and authenticity of the dance.
