The Latin Quarter – Salsa – Keenes Dance Studion, Tarring Road, Worthing
Salsa is an incredibly popular worldwide Latin dance style but, and this will surprise many of you, the Salsa dance witnessed today takes its origins from 1970s New York! The term Salsa in describing the dance style as we know it, was thought to be coined by Izzy “Mr Salsa” Sanabria. Salsa, in Latin terminology, means a sauce and it is used by audiences to describe music played with fire and passion i.e. “They’re cooking!” The music is Afro-Cuban in origin and when taken together with Indian and European influences, and then transported to the US to be mixed with Jazz and brass, it takes on the many forms today that are bundled up as Salsa. In the 1970s a group of young Puerto Ricans in New York made the dance what it is today.
Salsa is a 6 step dance counted over 8 beats. It’s a partner dance and danced in a way permitting lots of local styling, so expect to see loads of variations on a theme.
You can taste the passion yourself every week at Keenes, Worthing.
