The word Mambo is Haitian in origin. It describes a voodoo priestess who serves the village as counsellor, healer, exorcist, etc. However, there is no dance of that name in Haiti! The dance originated from Haitians settled in Cuba. Confusing no?
The Mambo dance style is attributed to Perez Prado in 1943, who introduced it at the La Tropicana night club in Havana. It is danced to a fusion of swing and Cuban music. Various band leaders have created their own similar Mambo musical styles; all variations on a theme.
Mambo is enjoying a renaissance in New York night clubs. It is very eclectic – there are influences of African, Cuban, Jazz, Hip Hop, and strangely, even ballet.
